case of the mondays

It's funny how everything can get so stirred up around you sometimes. Life can be so dull at moments and then at the drop of a hat stuff is flying at you from every direction. I feel a bit bombarded lately with a lot of things. Some good, some bad, some exciting, some challenging.

So, something's got to give. And unfortunately I think it's this little baby. I'm not taking a real break from here but will probably be posting a bit inconsistently - basically when time allows - for the next few weeks. Hope you'll stick around.

Have a great week all! And, hope all is well with all of you :)

simple truth

Beautiful photographs by Brooklyn-based artist Jennifer Causey.

Growing up in the South, Jennifer is captivated by minimalism and the homemade. She loves exploring nature and finding the beauty in every day.

ouch.

Oh Friday, I wish I could be as excited about you as usual, but this week you are the eve of moving day part two. Oh, the soreness.

Moving into our new place this past Tuesday did not go as seamlessly as the roomies and I hoped (read: three woman should not try to move themselves without some sort of truck. Next time - note to self - shell out the cash to hire movers.)

It seemed like a good idea to do it on our own - we all always have - but we really didn't anticipate the troubles of getting Beth's stuff out... down her spiral staircase. All I will say is bruises in odd places, one messed up ankle, and a few almost spills. Such fun :)

So, I'm hoping I can rest a little tonight before we head over to my former place tomorrow to grab the rest of the big furniture.

I can't wait to be settled in so we can enjoy our new lovely place.

Hope you all have a great holiday weekend!!

friday, you are my favorite

LOVE LOVE LOVE Friday. Best feeling in the world.

This week absolutely flew by, which is fine by me because that means I'm that much closer to moving into my new place. The apartment is amazing, the roommates are tolerable (and by tolerable I mean also amazing!). And I am so so excited for a new start. This past year has been sort of a rough one personally that involved many changes and I can't wait to move on from all that business for good!

Plans this weekend, friends?

I just had a great lunch with an old friend. Tonight I'm going to my future roomies current place for her moving out party (a preface to our new apartment party). And the rest of the weekend is clear... plenty of time for couch hunting for our new place and hopefully some play time outside - August is almost over. I can't believe it.

Happy weekend!

Friday!

Well ... I was doing a really good job of posting consistently...

But this week I've been feeling a bit under the weather and haven't had much motivation to post. But next week, I promise some good stuff is coming! Pinky swear.

Any good plans this weekend, friends?

Tonight I'm hitting up the nats game (that is if another monsoon doesn't hit DC) and tomorrow I'm seeing a band I used to cover for a local paper - they are playing a little place in Arlington. Should be a good one!

See you next week for some regular posting :)

home sweet home

So happy today!

Tonight my friend (and soon-to-be housemate!) Beth and I are heading into my hometown of Frederick for dinner at Volt. We've been to this glorious place before and eaten in the lounge, but it has taken us just about a year to actually snag a table in the dining room on a weekend night. So, needless to say, I can't wait. Delicious food in my favorite downtown with a good friend. Doesn't get any better.

Happy Friday all. Any good plans?

sound and vision

Between eying the colorful photos of a friend's travels through Asia and those of an inspiring international photo project, I want to surround myself with all things patterned and vibrant.

Cult phenomenon Mociun utterly satisfied this craving of mine with its originality and intense love of prints.

Started by Caitlin Mociun, a RISD textiles grad and world traveler, the designs are inspired by an ahistorical use of various cultural pattern and textile traditions.  The Bauhaus combination of art and craft are employed as well.

I'm back!

Soooooo I have definitely been MIA ... for a LONG time. But that ends today!

Let's see if I can catch you up on where I've been. The super condensed short version: felt bogged down by stuff at work. And the newly single life has been interesting and busy. Then I hurt my foot. Then I've been trying to find an apartment. Then there were some family health problems. Then one of my best friends came back from India after a year there. Then I had to go to New York City :) Then I had vacation. Then I decided it's good to slowww down.

All in all, things were a bit hectic and trying to find the time to focus here was difficult. But, now, I'm back and rested and ready to blog again. Stay tuned for a full post on Monday.

Hope all of you are doing well - I missed you so much xo

Happy Friday friends.

relief.

Hooray! It's Friday. Finally.

I can just feel the stress leaving my body.

I cannot, I repeat CANNOT, wait until the summer months officially arrive. Work just seems to get crazier and crazier and longer and longer. I'm really longing for the days of less to do.

This weekend should be a good one though. Dinner at Masa 14 with my girlie Liz tonight. Then heading over to Baltimore - it's been too long since I've been.

...aaand I hear it's supposed to be nice out (but I'll believe that when I see it!)

Have a great weekend! xo

Yay Friday!

Whewww.. the weekend is here! This has been the longest, weirdest week ever.

First I thought it was Thursday on Tuesday, then I thought it was Tuesday on Wednesday. Bleh. What a hectic week!

So this weekend I think I just need some down time. I have some things that need to get done, but the rest of the weekend will be spent enjoying this summery, warm weather we are having. My plan is to be parked outside with the pup during any and all free moments!

What are you up to this weekend?? Hope it's something good :)

home sweet home

Happy Sunday all. Hope you had a great weekend.

I had a wonderful weekend for sure. I didn't do too much but my Saturday definitely was enough of a great day to last me for awhile.

Ten of my coworker friends and I volunteered Saturday for Habitat for Humanity DC. We worked in a Habitat community in Northeast finishing up a couple of the last homes in that neighborhood. My team (dubbed "The A Team" by our team leader, who works for AmeriCorps) worked on finishing up drywall in the basement of a home. And by finishing I mean measuring, cutting and hanging the actual drywall - no messing around (my muscles still hurt a little!).  We worked on this all day but it was more than satisfying. It felt good to contribute to the walls of someone's actual home. We got to meet the future homeowner, too, which made the experience all the better.

When I was in high school a friend of mine lived in a Habitat house. His Dad had taken off and left the family with little to nothing and I remember how happy my friend was that people dedicated their time to give them that house. Since then I've always wanted to volunteer and I'm happy that I got the opportunity Saturday. It was work but it was also a lot of fun. I highly recommend.

Have a great week everyone!

Friday, I love you

Just like every other Friday.... so happy!

I live for Fridays, especially when these work weeks from hell start to become more frequent.

This weekend will be exactly what I need.

Tomorrow, a few friends and I are headed to a Virginia winery for a day of wine tasting for my friend Diana's birthday. She hates celebrating her own birthday. So we came up with this brilliant plan in an effort to coax her into celebrating herself for a second. Success! But it's supposed to pour down rain. BAD. Lucky for us, there is a pretty good-sized indoor area. It might be fun to play in the rain a little though.

Then, on Sunday, a friend and I are trying to sneak over to another friend's place to help out with her new little bundle. Her beautiful baby boy has only been around a few weeks, but she needs a break and we'd love to help her get some time for herself.

Happy weekend all! See you Monday :)

Sometimes when it rains, you just have to let it pour. And sometimes you have to just have to jump in and get soaking wet. It is then that beauty is formed - Stacey Gardner

jeff fried photography

New York City Photographer Jeff Fried started getting into photography at age 20. But it was one color printing class years later that stirred his momentum, pushing him to transform his love of taking pictures into a full-fledged profession.

When focused in on his art, Jeff spends much of his time documenting friends and family in the spaces around him. But his shots of seemingly typical imagery are anything but mundane. Jeff manages to take everyday occurrences, like sitting in a dimly lit room, outside the realm of banality - conveying the emotion hidden in ordinary, real life moments.

As a spectator, it's easy to get lost in trying to decipher the thoughts of his subjects.

In Jeff's commercial work, he shows sensitivity to the needs of his clients, but the sort of raw, poetic qualities seen in his personal photos are still very much apparent.

I spoke to Jeff recently about his work. Here is what he had to say:

What made you decide to pursue photography professionally?
I’ve always felt extremely fortunate to have found something that I am good at and love to do. I started taking pictures when I was twenty and printing color film when I was twenty-two. I was shooting and printing pretty much non-stop so pursuing photography as a profession just seemed logical. After studying Art Photography at Syracuse University I moved to NYC, sold my car, bought a nice digital SLR, and started making efforts to put my name out as a New York City-based commercial photographer.

Tell us a little about some of your recent projects.
I've been gradually expanding upon a series of environmental portraits of young men over the past four years. I call the series "Disillusion." I started the project just before I entered my last year at Syracuse. I was seeing a lot of my male friends enter into a sort of personal funk (and in the midst of one myself). Each of us had our own reasons. Whether it was girls, family, jobs, school or whatever, for all us it was manifesting itself in a very noticeable way. We would talk on the phone or in person and the conversations would always revolve around these pretty depressed concepts. We’d often talk about how it’s a fairly common stereotype that young males, really guys in general, aren’t in touch with their emotions. That wasn’t the case with my friends and myself so I set out to embrace these feelings and try to capture them on film. I wanted to portray young men in a way they aren’t usually portrayed. I'm not sure if I'm done with that project. I say that because sometimes I still see and feel the funk.

I've recently started another project called "The Heart." My parent's decided to move out of the house my family had lived in since '93. Even though they wanted to move and had talked about doing so for a while, the actual process was sad. I have not lived at home since 2003, yet moving brought me to realize how attached I was to that house. While I helped my parents move I kept thinking of the saying "home is where the heart is" and what moving homes means for that idea. Honestly, the more I think about that saying within the context of moving, the less I understand it.

We all have someone or something that inspires our life and work. What inspires you in your work?
Personally, the world around me. I tend to shoot what's in front of me, where I live, the people I know. Professionally, I work to understand what the client is trying to portray, then I let my imagination run.

Favorite picture you've taken?
Without a doubt my Grandma standing outside on her balcony one spring afternoon. It was just before her 92nd birthday. I came home from school with a 4x5 and a bunch of film. I had been planning to photograph her out on the balcony for a while. The weather was beautiful on this particular day so I went up to her room to try to convince her to let me take her picture. My Grandma's lived with my family since I was 15 or 16. When I got to her room she was wearing her bright magenta button down shirt, holding a cordless phone in one hand and some crumbled tissue in the other. She said she was waiting for a call. She told me I could only take her picture if I let her wear her sunglasses. She has these incredibly suiting sunglasses that she found on a rack at CVS. So I couldn't argue with that. I went out on her balcony and set up the frame then asked her to join me. 4x5 film is pretty expensive so I only fired two frames, one of which is my all-time favorite. Both of her hands are up and she's mid-sentence. People always tell me they expect her to sound something like George Costanza's mom. It's kind of funny how many people will then proceed to put their hands in the air and put on their Jewish Grandmother accent and say "Don't fuhget to cawl ya grand-motha!"

Favorite photo taken by someone else?
That’s not a fair question. I love too many. Some of the first that come to mind are DiCorcia’s Hollywood photos: Ike Cole, Eddie Anderson. I also really like Jeff Wall, Stephen Shore, Paul Graham, Joel Sternfeld. The list goes on.

Favorite client you've done work for thus far?
Mbarqgo. Hands down. They flew me out to LA to shoot. That was a first time a client had ever done that.

What type of cameras do you use?
It really depends on the shoot. I bought my first camera when I was 20. It was an old Canon AE-1. I think it was made in '78 or '79. I first learned to print film with that camera. I still carry that camera with me to this day. Years later I moved to NYC and decided to sell my car and invest in a Canon 5D. I guess I was branded. When I was a student and had an equipment room full of gear I would always gravitate to the 4x5. I loved how clunky and process oriented it was. Somehow I convinced my professors to loan the gear over the summer before.

Name the first photographer that comes to your mind.
Philip Lorca-DiCorcia. Gotta love DiCorcia.

If you could be invisible with your camera, where would you go, what would you shoot?
If I could be invisible with a camera well then I’d also like to request that I can travel through time. I’d go document my family during my childhood. If time travel isn’t available then I’d probably go to the White House.

Dream photo gig?
Midnight snack with Obama in the White House Kitchen.

What I love about your photographs is how real and contemplative they are. Is that something you aim for? What do you look to capture in your photos?
Well thank you kindly. When I’m shooting for myself I often like to stage the scene. I typically have an agenda in mind.

Thanks Jeff for taking the time to talk!

Keep up with JFP
twitter.

Check out his recent series Getting Stranger.
I love the concept.

Happy weekend

Happy Sunday everyone.

This has been such a wonderful weekend so far (which is so refreshing after the work week from hell)  and I still have a full day ahead of me.

On Friday, I met up with one of my very best friends. She just moved here this past week and we haven't seen each other in years. So, of course, it was wonderful to see her beautiful face again. Our little dinner turned into a 10-hour marathon out on the town. It was just like old times. Causing trouble :)

The rest of the weekend I have been engulfed in writing, but have been enjoying the spring-like weather we are getting. I've been playing outside as much as possible. Sunshine. A nice breeze. Now this is the March in Maryland I know and love!

Hope your weekend is going well, too.

TGIF

Happy Friday all!

So happy the weekend is finally here, aren't you? This has been one stressful week (a far cry from last week's stranded in the house/no work/no play snowmageddon).

So I'm happy to finally let loose and blow off some steam.

Tonight I'm headed to Marvin for a girly date with a friend of a friend :)

And, tomorrow is my friend Beth's birthday, so a group of us are headed to Bistro Cacao for a romantic French dinner and night out on the town. It's going to be a good one! Perhaps even slightly epic.

Any exciting plans this weekend?

P.S. Check out my brand new blog Bang Your Head - I hope you like!

happy friday!

sooo Soooo SOOOO happy that the weekend is finally here. With all this SNOWpocalypse talk here in DC, I'm anxious to be in my own house and away from all the PANIC!

These are the times I miss Syracuse winters. No joke.

Have a good weekend all. Play in the snow :)
