Designer and Painter Richard Lee wishes he were a minimalist. But, like any good hoarder, he just can't seem to part ways with the overflow of great stuff in his apartment.

And I totally get it.

Not only is his apartment a flattering showcase for his tremendous art collection, it has great character, echoing that of an old family home. And, as ostentatious as it may seem - with its touches of gilding and early 19th century royal furniture - Lee’s place actually contains a lot of DIY.

I was talking to my friend Rachel about this the other day as she photographed bits of downtown for her photography class: there is nothing better than breaking the rules, especially when you know how to break them the right way.

Future Perfect owner David Alhadeff was recently featured in New York magazine's Home Design Issue for his liberated, wildly-eclectic, treasure-filled, break-all-the-rules apartment. It doesn't get much better than this, in my opinion.

The Bedroom: Ikea bookshelves, stress-reducing pink paint, resin trees.

The Living Room: A tufted sofa from Upstate NY, white couch, white paint, a Timorous Beasties rug.

The Kitchen: A Donkey Kong Jr. game from Craigslist, Polor Bear toy figures in the freezer.

The Dining Room: A chair collection including two Philippe Starck for Kartell designs, a Nikolai Moderbacher (at top, on wheels), and a Stopit dining chair by Redstr/Collective (bottom right).

Alhadeff's incredibly fun loft features a mix of bold color and diverse pieces that seemingly have no place together. But, in the end, they yield one wonderfully creative result. What a delight.
